There’s a new generation of South African creatives refusing to wait for permission, and Mpho Masiu stands proudly among them. Actress, filmmaker, producer, entrepreneur, and mother — Mpho represents the kind of fearless ambition reshaping the entertainment industry from the ground up.
At first glance, describing Mpho as a “rising star” sounds accurate, but once you look deeper into her journey, it quickly becomes clear that the title barely scratches the surface. Her work ethic, vision, and ability to navigate multiple creative spaces position her as far more than an upcoming talent. She is actively building an empire.
Born and raised in Khuma, a township in the North-West province, Mpho’s story is one rooted in resilience and determination. Coming from a background where opportunities in television and filmmaking are often limited, she refused to let geography define her future. Instead, she used her passion as fuel to break through barriers and create space for herself in an industry that can be notoriously difficult to enter.
Many audiences first encountered Mpho through her acting work. She made her debut on Skeem Saam before landing appearances on productions such as Rhythm City, Diamond City, and Family Secrets, where she portrayed the role of young Cleo. With every appearance, her confidence and versatility continued to grow, proving she had the talent to stand alongside established names in the industry.
Yet acting was never her only dream.
Behind the camera is where Mpho truly discovered her purpose. While many actors focus solely on performing, she developed a deep love for screenplay writing and directing. For her, storytelling is not just entertainment — it is cultural preservation. She strongly believes that many authentic Black South African stories remain untold, and she has dedicated herself to changing that narrative.
This passion eventually led to the creation of Masiu Empire Productions, her own production company designed to tell original, meaningful stories rooted in authentic experiences. Rather than waiting endlessly for auditions or opportunities from mainstream gatekeepers, Mpho took control of her own destiny. She created a platform not only for herself, but also for other creatives in the North- West province who struggle to access the entertainment industry.
Her mindset toward success is refreshingly honest. Mpho openly challenges the idea of waiting for someone else to “open the industry.” According to her, sitting around hoping for opportunities can sometimes become an illusion. Instead, she believes creatives must build, create, and innovate for themselves.
That mindset has already produced impressive results.
One of her standout projects, Tumelo, earned recognition after winning Best Film at the Soweto International Film Festival in 2020. The project marked a major milestone for Masiu Empire Productions and solidified her growing reputation as a serious filmmaker. The film premiered during the official launch of her production company and remains a project especially close to her heart because of its emotional depth and ability to touch lives.
Mpho’s creativity extends beyond filmmaking. In 2020, she also ventured into fashion by launching Empire Boutique through Instagram, proving once again that her entrepreneurial spirit knows no limits. She embodies the modern creative entrepreneur — someone who understands that storytelling, branding, fashion, and digital culture all intersect in today’s entertainment landscape.
Of course, the journey hasn’t been easy.
Like many creatives, Mpho faced rejection early in her career. Auditions did not always go her way, opportunities were sometimes scarce, and the entertainment industry often tested her patience. But instead of allowing rejection to discourage her, she used it as motivation to keep improving. Her perseverance became one of her greatest strengths.
Another major turning point in her life was motherhood. Becoming a mother transformed the way she viewed success and responsibility. She realized she had to work harder, dream bigger, and build something meaningful not only for herself, but also for her children. Legacy became a driving force behind everything she pursued.
The Covid-19 pandemic also presented new challenges for Masiu Empire Productions. At the time, her web series Girl Looking for Love was gaining momentum in the North-West province, but production came to a halt due to lockdown restrictions. Like countless creatives around the world, she was forced to rethink her approach. Instead of giving up, she adapted by exploring digital releases and alternative storytelling methods. Projects such as Judy, released on YouTube, demonstrated her ability to innovate even during uncertainty.
Today, Mpho Masiu represents far more than success in entertainment. She symbolizes self-belief, independence, and creative ownership. Her journey proves that talent alone is not enough — vision, persistence, and courage are equally important.
In an industry constantly evolving, one thing is certain: Mpho Masiu is not waiting for the future to arrive. She is creating it herself.
