A conversation about masculinity, discipline, and changing the narrative
Ruan Scheepers is far more than a model or pageant finalist. Known for his appearances in the
Mr South Africa competition and his popular #AskAMan conversations on Twitter, Scheepers
has built a personal brand rooted in purpose, advocacy, and self-development.
For Ruan, competing in the MR World South Africa pageant was never just about appearances.
Instead, it became a stepping- stone toward creating meaningful conversations around
masculinity and social responsibility.
“I was inspired by Dr Fezile Mkhize and how he represented South Africa internationally,” says
Scheepers. “The experience taught me the importance of learning from others and understanding
different perspectives.”
While many recognize him for his polished image and fitness lifestyle, Ruan is deeply passionate
about addressing gender-based violence in South Africa. He believes that harmful male behavior
often continues because men protect one another under the guise of loyalty and “bro code”
culture.
According to Scheepers, real change begins when men start holding each other accountable.
“We should stand behind women, support them, and educate younger generations to create a
healthier society,” he explains.
Ruan also emphasizes that equality should never be treated as a threat.
“It is not a man’s world, and no woman should feel forced to ‘know her place.’”
Beyond activism, fitness remains central to his life. A former judo athlete who once represented
South Africa in the sport, Ruan believes physical health and mental wellness are closely
connected.
“When you feel good, you look good.”
That confidence is reflected across his social media presence, although he is quick to remind
followers that online perfection is often carefully curated.
“People see one perfect picture, but they don’t see the hundred photos taken behind the scenes,”
he says.

Discipline, according to Scheepers, is the secret behind everything — from maintaining a healthy
lifestyle to balancing social life and professional commitments.
Today, Ruan continues to build his career in modelling while pursuing academic excellence.
Currently involved in clinical trials and research, he hopes to complete a PhD in Science in the
future.
For him, success is ultimately simple:
