Remembering Lesego Semenya: The Chef Who Changed the Game

South Africa lost more than a chef when Lesego Semenya passed away. The country lost a
cultural storyteller, entrepreneur, mentor, and culinary visionary.
Popularly known as “Les Da Chef,” Lesego transformed food into a language of identity and
pride. Born and raised in Soweto, his journey began far from the kitchen. Before becoming one
of the country’s most celebrated chefs, he worked in corporate engineering — a path he
eventually abandoned in pursuit of passion.
That decision changed his life forever.

After studying at the prestigious Prue Leith Chef’s Academy, Lesego quickly built a reputation
for innovation and excellence. His achievements included designing the official pie for British
football fans during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and working in Michelin-starred kitchens abroad.
But what truly made Lesego special was his ability to connect culture and cuisine. Whether
appearing on radio, television, or writing for major publications, he consistently educated South
Africans about food, heritage, and entrepreneurship.
His bestselling cookbook Dijo: My Food, My Journey became more than a recipe collection — it
became a reflection of African identity told through flavour.
Lesego’s impact stretched far beyond the kitchen. He represented South Africa internationally,
collaborated with major brands, mentored young creatives, and inspired countless people to
dream bigger.
His passing leaves a void impossible to replace, but his legacy will continue to nourish
generations to come.
